“How many onkis to be at home” is a collaborative project between Alexandra Galateia Tsolou and Michail Chatzievangelou Manali that attempts to explore how support can become a practice for collective healing, especially during challenging times. Based on their shared experiences of separation and growth, they develop a communication piece that spans two canvases.

The paintings take the form of a love letter to their past that aims to empower them in the future. They “responded” by embroidering on each others work.

So what is an onki?

Onki is a stuffed toy that appears throughout this project as a symbol of nostalgia and childhood, reimagined in a new context.

Alexandra Galateia Tsolou is an artist based in Greece and the Netherlands.Informed by her experiences, she views the artistic process as an opportunity to express herself through making. Intrigued to process complex social issues about identity, her artistic practice blends social critique about politics of care, visibility, power dynamics, childhood, gender roles and neurodiversity. She is working with performance, text, painting, video, photography and textiles.

At present, she is a student at BA (De)Fine Arts, Willem de Kooning Academy.

Michail Chatzievangelou Manali is an illustrator and aspiring game developer currently based in Rotterdam.
