OPENING TENTOONSTELLING  "BUKU STORIES"

BUKU STORIES is a group exhibition as a result of an organic collaboration between Indonesian, Dutch/Indonesian and Dutch/Surinam artists. Buku means book in Indonesian, but also in Surinamese and makes a strong connection between the shared stories. 

Stories about being different, eager to belong to something, stories about worlds to be yet discovered, heard and understood. This exhibition will take you on a creative journey, as part of these artists's research into their roots, using illustrations, food and texts incorporated in books – thus inviting you, as a visitor, to get to know them, as people and artists.

NETHERLANDS

·       Danny Rumbl is an illustrator and mural artist based in Rotterdam. His Buku Danny Gemuruh is a book, full of photo’s, stories and interwies,  about his exploration to his Indonesian roots, focusing on food culture. He expresses this by  translating dishes and recipies into his own style of drawing and painting.  For this project, he made a study trip last summer to Indonesia, his mother's native country, where Danny started working with fellow Indonesian artists from the street-artand graffitiscene, all being included in his book. Upon returning to the Netherlands, Danny met artists with the same Dutch Indonesian roots for a conversation and collaboration on a wall.

 ·       Saskia van Amstel is an illustrator & small publisher that makes works under the name: Burning Desk about subjects that deserve more attention. During this exhibition Burning Desk will exhibit her selfpublished book 'My colour doesn't define me', which is about her personal experiences with racism and unconscious bias from different stages in her life. Her publication is a visual book full with illustrations in a 90's schoolplanner style where every spread has a different design. Despite the heavy subject, her book is very colourful and sometimes even written with a sense of humor. Burning Desk will also display some of her favorite pages of the book that will be sold as limited edition prints, next to some of her newest works.

INDONESIA

·       Sicovecas is an Indonesian graffiti and visual artist. His raw, abstract and organic work is a social act about „interaction”, creating colorful and sensitive pieces with stories of neighbors and families, shared food, and waiting for the rain to pass on people’s porches. His name, a play on “As I See (Sic)”, reflects how he as artist interacts with the environment around him – be it the social or the physical. He has held exhibitions and joined events in Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Singapore & France.

Buku Stories is een groepstentoonstelling als resultaat van een organische samenwerking tussen Indonesische, Nederlands/Indonesische en Nederlands/Surinaamse kunstenaars. Buku betekent boek in het Indonesisch, maar ook in het Surinaams en legt een sterke verbinding tussen de gedeelde verhalen.

Verhalen over anders zijn, ergens bij willen horen, verhalen over werelden die nog ontdekt, gehoord en begrepen moeten worden. Deze tentoonstelling neemt je mee op een creatieve reis, als onderdeel van het onderzoek van deze kunstenaars naar hun roots, met behulp van illustraties, eten en teksten verwerkt in boeken – en nodigt je uit, als bezoeker, om hen te leren kennen, als mensen en kunstenaars.

NEDERLAND

·       Danny Rumbl is een illustrator en muralist gevestigd in Rotterdam. Buku Danny Gemuruh is een boek, vol foto's, verhalen en interviews, over zijn ontdekkingsreis naar zijn Indonesische roots, met een focus op eetcultuur. Hij uit dit door gerechten en recepten te vertalen naar zijn eigen teken- en schilderstijl. Voor dit project maakte hij afgelopen zomer een studiereis naar Indonesië, de geboorteplaats van zijn moeder, waar Danny begon te werken met Indonesische kunstenaars uit de street art en graffiti scene, die allemaal in zijn boek zijn opgenomen.

·       Saskia van Amstel is een illustrator en uitgever gevestigd in Rotterdam. Ze werkt onder de naam: Burning Desk. Tijdens deze tentoonstelling presenteert Burning Desk haar zelf uitgegeven boek 'My colour doesn't define me', een boek vol illustraties in de stijl van de jaren 90, dat gaat over haar persoonlijke ervaringen met racisme en onbewuste vooroordelen uit verschillende fasen in haar leven. Ondanks het zware onderwerp is haar boek erg kleurrijk en soms zelfs met humor geschreven.

INDONESIË

·       Sicovecas

Sicovecas is een Indonesische graffiti- en beeldend kunstenaar. Zijn rauwe, abstracte en organische werk gaat over 'interactie', waarbij hij kleurrijke en gevoelige stukken creëert met verhalen over buren en families. Zijn naam, een woordspeling op 'As I See (Sic)', weerspiegelt hoe hij als kunstenaar omgaat met de omgeving om hem heen - of het nu sociaal of fysiek is. Hij heeft tentoongesteld en deelgenomen aan evenementen in Indonesië, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Singapore en Frankrijk.
